Blog No.169 - Australian Competition and Consumer Commission – Part 3: 8 February 2025

Margaret on the 18th of May 2022 when we spent 3 nights at Port Eliott.  She was so thin by then.  Her T-shirt says ‘I am a nurse; I stab people and I know things’.

She never complained once about being so very ill.

ACCC Contacts in May 2022

This summarises my dealings with the ACCC in May 2022.  The ACCC was the only agency that showed any interest in the unlawful behaviour of the health insurers.

Telephone Interview Monday 2 May 2022

Margaret and I made ourselves available for an ACCC telephone interview at 1.30 pm on Monday 2nd of May 2022.  It commenced at 1.31 pm and took 55 minutes 13 seconds.  Three ACCC officers took part – Sita McTavish, Madelaine Holt and a third officer.  We were asked detailed questions about the start of our health insurance with HCF, the extent of our coverage and whether we relied on assurances made by HCF about the extent of our health insurance coverage.  We were told approximately 200,000 complaints were made to the ACCC every year and that the ACCC was doing a preliminary investigation to decide if further investigation was warranted.

The ACCC officers were at all times courteous and polite and asked relevant questions.  When the interview finished, Margaret and I felt that finally, a government regulator was examining the unlawful behaviour of HCF.

ACCC Overview - May 2022

The impression given by the ACCC during the phone interview was positive and I kept the ACCC fully informed of all developments with HCF.  Unlike HCF and the Ombudsman, the ACCC always replied.  On 3 May 2022, I sent the ACCC, all documents which it asked for during the interview.  On 5 May 2022, the ACCC confirmed it received them.

On 9 May 2022, I sent the ACCC a letter summarising my dealings with Mark Johnson (HCF Chairman) and Sheena Jack (CEO) in May 2022.  Later the same day, I emailed a copy of the email from the HCF Chairman Mark Johnson dated 9 May 2022.  When I received a letter from Mark Johnson on 13 May 2022, I sent that to the ACCC and it acknowledged its receipt on 18 May 2022.

During May 2022, it seemed the ACCC would be the one government agency that might do something about the health insurers.

We were again disappointed after the 22nd of May Australian elections, resulting in a new government.

Why would any government agencies care when they could draw their salaries and do nothing – especially when political pressure was applied demanding that they do nothing?
